White-nose syndrome is considered one of the worst wildlife diseases in modern times and has killed millions of bats across North America. The species has greatly declined in most of its former range in the eastern United States due to the impacts of white-nose syndrome (WNS). For more information about the syndrome check out the resources below or contact Thomas M. Ward, CWB, PWS Environmental Program Manager | Senior Ecologist here.
We care about bats and white-nose syndrome for many reasons.Bats eat insects. In fact, bats contribute about $3.7 billion worth of insect control for farmers in the US each year. Bats help keep natural areas healthy. Bats are important species wherever they live. Other living things in caves depend on bats because bat guano (droppings) provides them nutrient.Bats are cool! Bats are the only mammals that fly, and they are masters of echolocation. Bats only have 1-3 pupsper year, and many live together in colonies, hibernating through the winter. The USGS National Wildlife Health Center (NWHC) assists State, Federal, and Tribal wildlife agencies nationwide with early detection of Pseudogymnoascus destructans (Pd), and addresses specific research priorities identified by partners in conjunction with the White-Nose Syndrome National Plan.
